There are now over 1000 local U3A (University of the Third Age) groups across the country with over 425,000 members. Its national governing body is known as the Third Age Trust (TAT). There are also U3A organisations in countries around the world from Australia to China to Siberia (check out the worldwide network). The first U3A was established in Toulouse, France in 1973. The first UK one was set up in Cambridge in 1982.
TAT provides support to local groups; as well as advice on governance, legal, insurance and copyright issues, it has a series of subject specialists who can help group co-ordinators, especially those setting up new groups.
